A question that keeps being asked by many of our customers is which adhesive to use for an installation of Karndean Flooring. The first and foremost answer is that it should be a Karndean branded adhesive, as use of any other brand will render the Lifetime Warranty of your Karndean floor null and void. It then follows on to which type of Karndean Adhesive to use for which type of installation.
Karndean Epoxy Resin is a two-part mix. Both components should be mixed together with a drill and paddle to a smooth consistency and the contents poured out within 5 minutes of mixing time. If left within the container the resin will harden inside 15 minutes; on the floor you have up to one hour working time. It is recommended for use in areas subject to excessive moisture and temperature. Any areas under question consult the Karndean Technical team.
A 4kg tub will cover approximately 12m²
NOTE: Eye protection and gloves must be worn when working with this product.
High Temperature Adhesive
This is a modified Acrylic adhesive with an improved service temperature. It is designed for use in areas subject to excessive heat and direct sunlight (conservatories/shop windows/patio doors/external glass panel doors and under floor heating).
Puddles or streaks MUST NOT be left when applying the adhesive to the sub-floor. Any excess adhesive must be wiped off flooring immediately with a clean damp cloth. Karndean always recommend working section by section, as the product must be laid in wet adhesive. The open time is about 15 minutes, depending on atmospheric conditions on site.
A Karndean High Temperature 15ltr tub will give an approximate coverage of 50m² and a Karndean High Temperature 5ltr tub 17m². This product has been pretty much superseded by the Universal Adhesive below.
This is a resin free fibre-reinforced wet-bed high temperature dispersion adhesive for use indoors. This product is perfect for use on most absorbent surfaces that are level and sound. For use as with the High Temperature Adhesive and is easy to apply has a good open time.
Footnote on Conservatories:
If the area concerned may be subject to extremely excessive direct heat (50˚C or more), such as a fully glazed south facing conservatory, then the floor must be installed with Epoxy Adhesive. It is vitally important to keep the temperature in these rooms at a constant 18˚C – 26˚C before, during and for 24hrs following installation. It would also be prudent to shade all windows in order to maintain constant temperatures for 48hrs following installation.
Pressure Sensitive Adhesive
The Pressure Sensitive Adhesive is great for use in most normal residential and commercial installations. It is best used as a semi-dry/tack, and once in this state you will have about 2 hours working time.
This product comes in 3 sizes. The Karndean Pressure Sensitive 15ltr tub will give approximately 60m² coverage, a Karndean Pressure Sensitive 5ltr tub 20m² and the Karndean Pressure Sensitive 2.5ltr tub will give approximately 10m².
Last but not least is the Acrylic Adhesive which is ideal for use in most normal residential and commercial installations. Karndean always recommend that the installer works section by section with this product as the flooring must be wet bonded when installed with it. Acrylic Adhesive has an open time of approximately 15 minutes depending on atmospheric conditions on the site.
This is just a brief guide to which Karndean Adhesive would be best suited to your installation, and is by no means exhaustive. Reference has been taken for the above from the Karndean Technical notes on the adhesives. If you have any doubts, always consult your professional fitter or otherwise the Karndean Technical team would be able to answer your questions and they can be contacted using the information given on the Karndean Website
OPUS PALLIDA WP418
There is a new colour of Karndean in their Opus range. Opus Pallida WP418 is another great addition to the affordable range from Karndean, with light brown tones and hints of silver and grey. It also has the customary intricate grain details that customers have become used to from Karndean.
The planks are available as the ‘Extra Wide’ format of 1220mm x 179mm. It has the standard dimensions from the Opus range having a 0.55mm wear layer and 2.5mm thickness.
Follow this simple 5 step guide to install Karndean LooseLay flooring:
Ensure that you acclimatise Karndean LooseLay for at least 48h prior to installation.
Preparation of the subfloor which must be dry, smooth, level, clean and dust-free.
Ensure that the room edges are solid and that all thresholds or openings are edged with a strip of Karndean Tackifier.
Install the LooseLay with a ‘tight’ fit to the wall and up against themselves.
If the floor area is longer than 4m please follow the Grid stick installation.
Please note that before installing Karndean LooseLay, you should refer to our full installation instructions.
Acclimatisation of Material
Karndean LooseLay must be removed from its’ packaging at least 48 hours prior to installation, (product may be stacked, but must be rested flat) and allowed to acclimatise in the room where the installation will be taking place. The ambient room temperature should be kept between 18°C – 29°C (65°F – 85°F).
Subfloor preparation must comply with ASTM F710, AS/NZS 1884, BS 8203, DTU 53.2, DIN 18365 (Teil C) or other applicable National Standards and Building Codes for the installation of Resilient Flooring and in strict accordance with the following installation guidelines:
The subfloor must be:
- clean and dust-free
It should also be prepared as follows, dependant on your subfloor type. Note: Solvents and other abrasive chemicals used to clean or remove subfloor contaminants can damage the backing of Karndean LooseLay and affect the product’s performance.
Old Adhesive residues
All adhesive residues from previous installations must be completely removed.
Karndean LooseLay must only be installed on dry floors which must have a moisture reading of less than 95% RH (or according to the National Standard). If any sub floor shows moisture readings above this, then an acceptable damp proof membrane or moisture suppression system must be applied.
Note: that a compliant pH level is also a requirement for concrete slabs in some countries’ Standards. (If using the calcium chloride test procedure ASTM 1869-11 the reading must not be above 5lbs per 1000sq ft. per 24hrs).
Subfloors and Screeds: All cracks and joints must be filled using a cement based patching compound and the floor needs to be level in accordance with the applicable Standard, also Gypsum based concrete floors must be sealed with a compatible sealing compound.
Level any grout lines with a suitable smoothing compound and make the floor sound.
These should be solid with absolute minimal flexibility. All loose boards must be firmly fastened, gaps filled and undulations removed. Where necessary, overlay floorboards with flooring grade plywood (6mm or 9mm) or similar.
You must ensure that these floors are solid; any loose tiles are fixed and remove any surface polish or sealer.
Karndean recommend the removal of these products if installed directly to earth, bitumen/ cutback or pitch. Then prepare floor to applicable Standard.
Metal and Painted Floors
You must fully remove any loose paint or other finishes.
Consult your supplier.
Underfloor Heating and Services
Karndean LooseLay is suitable over underfloor heating systems, as long as it is insulated from the heating system to ensure that the surface temperature does not rise above 27°C (80°F). The underfloor heating system must be switched off 48 hours before, during, and for 48 hours after the installation; then the temperature should be gradually increased (typically 2°C/hour) to the desired warmth. Mesh or wire systems must be bedded into a base coat of reinforced fibre smoothing compound. Please ensure that you refer to manufactures guidelines for required depth of aforementioned systems. Karndean LooseLay installation methods are then followed as recommended in these guidelines.
Before beginning the installation ensure to remove all debris or dust and clean the floor very well.
Karndean LooseLay can be installed on any subfloor; that is flat, level, smooth and dry, but need not be porous; using one of the following three options:
1. Loose lay:
Karndean LooseLay must be fitted ‘tight’; check that the room edges are solid and all thresholds and openings are edged with a 10cm (4”) strip of Karndean Tackifier or Pressure Sensitive Adhesive. The tiles/planks must be fitted ‘tightly’ to the wall and to themselves. If the floor area to be installed has any wall longer than 4m (13’) please treat the installation as a Grid stick installation (see below).
2. Grid stick:
In rooms with any wall longer than 4m (13’) the perimeter of the room requires a 10cm (4”) strip of Karndean Tackifier or Pressure Sensitive Adhesive applied to the subfloor, and also at 4m (13’) distances parallel to each perimeter wall, covering the floor in a grid fashion. The Karndean LooseLay tiles or planks are then fitted ‘tightly’ across the room to the wall and to themselves.
3. Heavy Traffic Areas:
In areas of high traffic (eg. high footfall- entrances, high frequency wheeled traffic) we recommend installing tiles/ planks with a full coverage tackifier/pressure sensitive adhesive. Note: The adhesive used should still allow for easy ‘peel up’ and replacement of tiles/planks in this area.
Note: High Spillage Wet Areas/Sun Rooms/Conservatories/Panoramic Windows:
In areas that are likely to be subject to high water spillage or extreme temperature fluctuations, the use of a full spread epoxy or urethane adhesive is recommended.
